What is Weight Loss Management?

Ryan Brennan • Nov 01, 2022

Of all the things we try to avoid on a daily basis, sudden or unexpected weight gain is one of the most prominent. We all want to look and feel our best, but doing so can be a challenge most people aren’t prepared for – especially if we have poor eating habits and excess body fat.

According to the CDC, nearly 42% of all American adults are considered overweight or obese – an increase of over 10% since 1999. Not only that, but the prevalence of severe obesity has increased from 4.7% to 9.2% in that time. Historically speaking, men have a higher risk of obesity than women.

And while nearly half of all American adults (130 million people) try to lose weight every year, most of them either won’t receive the results they wanted or give up before results appear. Either way, it’s clear that some people need help when achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

What is Weight Loss Management?

Weight loss management, as the name suggests, refers to the professional management – guidance, advice, direction, opinion, etc. – given to someone throughout their weight loss journey. If done by a medical doctor, it’s often referred to as physician-assisted weight loss.

The primary goal behind weight loss management is to help an individual identify their weight loss goals, while also providing practical advice on how to achieve those goals and how to stay motivated throughout the process. With the right help, maintaining weight loss is right around the corner.

Some of the methods and techniques used in weight loss management include counseling, therapy, supplementation, fasting, custom diets, counting calories, exercise routines, and much more. Physicians might also recommend the use of Lipotropic injections to improve metabolism.

7 Elements of a Significant Weight Loss Management Plan

A weight loss management plan is going to look a little different for everyone. Not only are our minds and bodies all unique in their own way, but we each have individual preferences, needs, wants, limitations, restrictions, desires, and more that will factor into your weight loss journey.

With that said, there are several elements – we’ve encountered seven – that are essential to any weight loss management plan, no matter what your goals are or where you’re currently at with your weight loss journey. Don’t worry, we’re going to detail these elements for you below!

1. Reasonable Goals

The first component of a successful and rapid weight loss program is the ability to set reasonable and practical goals and expectations. If you expect to lose 150 pounds in a couple of weeks, you’re going to be disappointed 100% of the time. Know what’s within reach – and then reach for it.

2. Finding the Right Diet

With so many different types of diets available today, finding the right one can be a chore – in some cases, a custom diet is needed. The good news is most diets have a similar success rate when given to the right person. Your doctor or nutritionist can help narrow down your options.

3. Favorite Foods

While there are a number of compromises and difficult decisions to make when finding the right diet, you should still find a way to work in some of your favorite foods from time to time. Even if your favorite food isn’t the healthiest option, you can always limit your intake with small portions.

4. Commitment to Exercise

In order to achieve a healthy body weight – as well as keep that weight off – there needs to be a heavy commitment to both nutrition and physical activity. They go hand in hand with one another, not only helping you lose weight, but also improving your mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

5. Tracking Weight

The fifth component of a successful weight loss plan is accurately and frequently tracking your weight. It might seem like the process is taking a long time, especially when you track your progress little by little every day, but that progress adds up and it will eventually produce results.

6. Tracking Diet

In addition to tracking your weight, you should also be tracking your food intake – including what you eat and drink, how much you eat and drink, and when you eat and drink. This makes it easy to go back and update or fix your diet in the future, especially if progress comes to a sudden halt.

7. Accountability & Support

The final component to successful body weight management programs is accountability and support. Everyone needs a good support system around them – people that celebrate you when things are going well, but motivate you when things are going poorly. They’ll help you stay on the right track.

In-Person vs. Online Weight Loss Management

Whether you’re interested in consulting with a trained physician or a certified nutritionist, most people are going to have two different options when seeking weight loss management – online care or in-person treatment. They each have pros and cons, so it’ll come down to preference.

While online weight loss management allows for convenient care from the comfort of one’s own home, it doesn’t quite provide the quality experience one receives from a face-to-face, in-person visit. If you’d like to increase your chances of success, we recommend an in-person visit.
