What to Expect During an IV Infusion Therapy Appointment

Ryan Megalio • Oct 05, 2021

In the modern world today, we often turn to oral medications when we’re feeling under the weather. Sometimes this is due to an illness, sometimes it’s due to a nutrient deficiency, and sometimes it’s due to dehydration. Whatever the case, medication and supplements can help.

Unfortunately, oral medications aren’t always the best solution. For example, some medications or supplements aren’t as effective when they pass through the digestive system. Not only that, but some people are unable or uncomfortable taking oral medication for a variety of reasons.

The good news is they don’t always have to. There are alternatives to taking oral medication and your doctor or health care clinic can help you find the right solution. For example, some people can largely benefit from infusion therapy -- a treatment that’s been around for over 100 years.

So, what is IV infusion therapy?

Also known as intravenous therapy, IV infusion therapy is a special treatment that allows healthcare professionals to deliver medications, nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, into the patient’s body via the bloodstream. It’s much more efficient than your typical oral administration.

In addition to helping those that are dehydrated, hungover, or experiencing a nutrient deficiency, IV infusion therapy can help treat a wide range of chronic conditions, such as inflammatory diseases, infection, immune system disorders, arthritis, gout, psoriasis, and much more.

Due to its wide range of uses, it’s very common to see doctors utilizing IV therapy on a regular basis. While there are a few side effects, such as dizziness, upset stomach, headaches, muscle stiffness, and itching at the IV injection site, it’s more effective than most oral treatments.

How Does IV Therapy Work?

IV therapy is an extremely straightforward process that is easy to understand. The medication or nutrients are added to an IV bag, which is connected to a small tube that’s attached to an IV needle. The doctor injects the needle directly into the patient’s vein, accessing the bloodstream.

The IV bag hangs upside down, which allows the medication to slowly drip down the tube and into the patient’s bloodstream. This gives the patient a steady flow of whatever medication or nutrients are in the IV bag, ensuring their body receives exactly what it needs at that moment.

For example, the IV bag might contain a mixture of saline solution, dextrose, lactated ringers, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, antibiotics, or other fluids. You’ll see IV therapy utilized in a hospital, emergency room, outpatient facility, doctor’s office, or your local health care clinic.

Preparing for an Intravenous Therapy Appointment

Although you’ll likely be awake during an IV therapy appointment and the amount of time it takes can vary, the procedure isn’t too boring. You’re allowed to bring a book or magazine to read, your phone, your laptop, watch a movie, or listen to music while sitting in a reclining chair.

There will be a nurse or doctor monitoring the infusion to ensure everything goes as planned. As you can imagine with any doctor’s office or hospital setting, the staff is committed to providing excellent service throughout the duration of the procedure. If you need anything, just ask.

You can also rest easy knowing that you can use the bathroom if needed. The nurse removes the needle while you use the bathroom and inject it back into the vein once you return. You’re allowed to bring a loved one and you’re usually allowed to eat or drink during the treatment.
